XCOM’s enemy is size

Over the weekend we posted the trailer forXCOM: Enemy Within, the meaty expansion to the excellent strategy gameXCOM: Enemy Unknown. It showed off new enemies that look like a mix between the mechanical squids ofThe Matrixand the alien ghosts fromFinal Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and both cybernetic and biological augments you can outfit your soldiers with.

We also learnedEnemy Withinwould release as $30 DLC on PC and Mac, but not on 360 and PS3. Rather,Enemy Withinwill be re-released on consoles as the Commander’s Edition, bundled withEnemy Unknownand all of its DLC for $40. It’s a good deal if you haven’t bought the game yet, but some console owners will basically be paying an extra ten bucks.

Speaking to Joystiq, Firaxis senior producer Garth DeAngelis explained, “For the expansion on the PC, it was fairly straightforward. But when it came to the consoles, it was too big. If we wanted to deliver the same content to the console players, we had to do it this way as a standalone expansion on a disc. We couldn’t simply just patch it in.” Significant changes to the baseEnemy Unknownexperience also contributed to the decision to re-release the game.

“It was either deliver it this way or not deliver it at all.” Well, putEnemy Withinthat context, it’s hard to complain. And only an extra ten bucks. And a heck of a deal for people who passed on the main game or its DLC, anyways. I like your problem solving, Firaxis. Do you guys?
