Long-timeMinecraftfans will instantly recognize the name Markus “Notch” Persson, the game’s original creator who has since sold its IP to Microsoft. While that marked the end of Notch’s involvement withMinecraft, he’s since come to social media to allude to the possibility of creating its spiritual successor.

Minecraft’s spiritual successor explained

In a January 1 post on X (formally Twitter,) Notch revealed he’s working on a new game designed to be a roguelike dungeon-crawler. In his words, he describes it as a “traditional roguelike (i.e. ADOM, nethack, etc) mixed with a tile based first person dungeon crawler (ie Legend of Grimrock (esp 2), Eye of the Beholder).”

At first, this sounds nothing likeMinecraft. You’d be right to think that this isn’t its spiritual successor at all. Rather, the possibility of this successor comes from the second half of the tweet asking if folks would “prefer for [Notch] to make a spiritual successor thing toMinecraft.” As he puts it, he can make a game for people who “love uncursing potions” or create what’d feel likeMinecraft 2under a different name and premise.

In other words, while it isn’t necessarily in the works right now, Notch isn’t opposed to making another game that’s reminiscent ofMinecraft. However, “spiritual successor” is still the key phrase here, as it’ll never lead to a direct sequel.

Is Notch making Minecraft 2?

No, Notch won’t be the one behind“Minecraft 2.”In response to a tweet asking whether making a sequel is even possible, he explains that it isn’t with Microsoft owning the IP. Instead, it’d be completely separate fromMinecraftwith a different name and setting but be a similar type of game.

Nonetheless, Notch is certainly working on another game, with the potential for a title similar toMinecraftappearing in the future. Whether he’ll release it in 2025 is unknown, but we can live on knowing we’ll eventually see another project come to fruition.
