Or is there no winning you over?

Watch Dogsgets a bad rap.

It’s a game everyone seems to have an opinion about whether they’ve played it or not. Part of that stems from thedisparitybetween how it looked in pre-release showings with what we ultimately got at launch. Part is due to the general fatigue with Ubisoft’s formula for open-world games. And yes, part of itdefinitelyhas to do with its protagonist Aiden Pearce and his so-called “iconic cap.”

Whenever I hear someone bring upWatch Dogs(which weirdly happens a lot, even in person) it’s in reference to one of those three easy-to-rib things, or the cherished spider-tank. Love that mech.

For our review, Chris felt the game failed to make “any meaningful impact on the genre,” but found himself “having a ton of fun” all the same. “If Ubisoft can take the game’s core fun factor and marry it with anactual‘next-gen’ experience the next time around, they’ll have something truly special.”

Which brings us to the upcoming sequel. Officially, it’s happening before April 2017. Unofficially, it’s expected to starthis guy right herewho some folks have taken to calling a “hipster.” We’ll assuredly find out more in a couple of weeks at E3. Ubisoft has started sending out swag:

I can get into about one big Ubisoft game per year. Usually, it’sFar Cry. IfWatch Dogs 2is going to win me over, that responsibility will fall most directly on its leading character.

I’m not as concerned with the visual fidelity oroverwhelming pre-order optionsas I am with the basics: having a protagonist I can tolerate if not actually empathize with and, ideally, enjoy. Get that right, build on the successes of the first game, and I may just be just be up for the sequel (depending on where in the year it falls and what else will be vying for my attention at that time).
