IN THE FACE
Subscription services have been growing in customer reach and quality over the past five years, with the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime bringing great content as well as HBO offering their programming as a standalone service. These shifting ways to be entertained has left a lot of the traditional sources scrambling to find their place in a changing world. After a commanding amount of wins for streaming and premium services during last night’s Emmy Awards Show, it doesn’t feel like these services are playing around anymore.
Outside ofThe Americans’lead actor win and FX remaining the ruler of the Limited Series, all of the “major” awards went to either a streaming or premium subscription-based program. Don’t even get me started on basic network TV either, outside ofSaturday Night Live’svariety sketch series win, basic cable got nothing in the major categories. They did pick up a few in guest spots but still, time to get with the times!

The big winner of the night wasThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which took home a whopping six awards including outstanding comedy series, lead actress in a comedy, supporting actress in a comedy series, best writing for a comedy series, and best directing. There was a lot of speculation leading into this awards show as to who would fill the power vacuum left after long-time Emmy favoriteVeephad ended, and I think we have our new queen.
The other big winners wereThe Assassination of Gianni Versacein the limited series category, andGame of Throneswhich won outstanding drama, and supporting actor in a dramatic role. My personal favorite anxiety inducerBlack Mirrortook home outstanding writing for a limited series and outstanding television movie both for the episode “USS Callister.”

One of the big snubs is the wildly loved and weirdTwin Peaksreturn on Showtime which got nothing to show for their two nominations. I do hopeDavid Lynch will be ok.Handmaid’s Talealso got snubbed after receiving the most nominations this year while walking away with zero awards last night, they were however presented with outstanding guest actress in a drama series last week at the creative Emmy’s.
You can see more of the awards below with the winners marked in bold, and yesRick and Mortywon outstanding animated program for their Pickle Rick episode. I know, I’m disappointed in the world as well.
