I want to believe
I’ve enjoyed covering the wild ride of the 3DS since the launch of the Switch. All signs point to the Switch taking over, and Nintendo has even said as much once it gets to the point where households are buying multiple units, but for now, it’s still alive and kicking. If you watched Nintendo’s E3 presentation you probably wouldn’t think the 3DS is still a priority (everything was Switch related), but Reggie has assured us for the millionth time that their portable isn’t dead yet.
Speaking to IGN, Reggie states: “We’re going to continue [focusing on the 3DS], we’re going to continue to have some new games on that platform. We’re going to announce [them], and we will over the next number of months, but it’s going to continue to be a vibrant piece of our overall business, certainly here in the Americas.” Reggie contends that E3 just wasn’t the right time to announce 3DS or mobile projects, including the upcomingMario Kart Tour— bound for Android and iOS.
Reggie talks about that timing as well: “Depending on the game, E3 could or could not be a place to shed light on mobile activity. In the case ofMario Kart Tour,we made the decision that there’s going to be another opportunity to shed more light on that app, especially shedding light when it’s closer to its launch. We continue to be on track to launch it in this current fiscal year for Nintendo.”
Again, we really can’t predict what will happen to the 3DS at the end of the year. We know some bigger projects are coming, but as the Switch continues to grow Nintendo will no doubt be less and less inclined to start up new ones.
