Seen at GDC: Game development is for whites only

Diversity (or lack thereof) gets the stink finger Spotted around the happenings of this year’s Game Developers Conference was a sticker that tells us game development is for whites only. Diversity in game development (especially amongst the sexes) continues to be a hot-button issue and with statements like these, it appears we have a ways to go for race diversity as well — at least in this anonymous person’s mind....

Sony files trademark for ‘The Order: 1886’

What is this? A new US trademark for “The Order: 1886” has been filed by Sony, and the application shows that this name is for use with videogames. So we know a new game is coming. Good. But we may have some clues as to where this game is coming from. A sharpNeoGAFthread points out that a similar trademark application was filed for “The Order” in Europe, at the Benelux IP office, and that this could have ties to the Netherlands-based Guerrilla Games studio....

It seems thatStar Wars: The Old Republicjust can’t catch a break. Despite being a very good game, many customers are still having frustrating problems with getting the game running. The latest issue sees an angry portion of gamers unable to install the software at all, with the game’s launcher downloading around 16GB of information, before giving up and starting again on an infinite loop. “Spider’s Thread” Bethesda and Tango Gameworks have announced this morning thatGhostwire: Tokyo, which has remained relatively dormant since its debut roughly a year ago,is getting a rather large free update on April 12 called “Spider’s Thread.” The big news is that it’s introducing a new mode to the game (the same moniker as the titular update), which asks players to “navigate a 30-stage gauntlet from over 12 hand-crafted levels.” Your job is to finish that gauntlet, with rewards doled out (like skills and in-game currency) for completing each stage....

Ubisoft prepares to defend itself from Vivendi hostile takeover

Fear of a Guillemot-free planet Remember when French conglomerate Vivendi gave up ownership in Activision Blizzard? You might struggle to remember the exact moment for a while — three years is a long time — but I assume you’ll have a flash of realization once you remember my perfect headline for the article about Activision splitting off from Vivendi:Active fission: $8.2B to split Activision from Vivendi. Pretty great, huh? Well, Vivendi might’ve let Activision buy back control of itself, but, apparently, that was not some video game-dumping strategy by the conglomerate, which seems to be setting itself up for a hostile takeover of Ubisoft....

Wii U update adds system transfers, eShop navigation options

As of an update released this week for Wii U, it’s now possible to move software and save data to a new console. God, I hope I never have to go through that. Never a good time. The other new feature — Wii Remote, Wii U Pro Controller, and Classic Controller support for eShop navigation — will get far more use. I’ve never had a problem just using the GamePad, but this is one of those things that really ought to be a user choice....

(Update) Square Enix’s next action RPG, Oninaki, has a progress-transfering demo out now

[Update:The demois now available on Steamas well.] I’m pretty stoked to try outOninakinext month. Say what you will about Tokyo RPG Factory’s past few projects (I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear), but I dig the attempt to keep the old school JRPG spirit alive, among other games likeOctopath Traveler.Oninaki‘s premise is pretty dope too. Basically it deals with the concepts of reincarnation, death, and suicide: with the promise of heavy story beats to support those themes....
