It would seem like a very fitting tribute — Namco Bandai released a commemorativeMr. Drillerwallpaper to celebrate the famous rescue of thetrapped Chilean miners. Somebody, somewhere has taken exception to this, however, and the wallpaper has since been removed.

The wallpaper, which was distributed via the publisher’sTwitter account, displayed our happy hero with the message,  “Mr. Driller offers admiration to the achievement of the drillers who drilled the rescue tunnel and celebrates the return of the 33 miners.” Namco has since stated that it didn’t give “proper consideration” to the situation, and issued an apology after taking down the image.Â

The weird thing is, this wallpaper isn’t offensive in the least, and even though there’s some obvious humor with the drill thing, it’s not like the miners died and Namco was making fun of them. We can’t see the outrage here, but this is quite a strange story nonetheless.
