Despite the PlayStation Vitabeating the PSPin terms of launch week sales, the boss of Japanese sales tracker Media Create isn’t impressed by the performance. Blaming Sony’s high price point,CEO Atsushi Hosokawa thinks the Vita could have done better.

“The shipment was abundant, so it seems that there were hardly any reports of inability to buy due to shortages,” he said.“Regarding sold units, to be honest we would like to have seen it sell a bit more, but you can say that it reached a certain level of success.”

Hosokawa stated that, bought with a game and required accessories, the Vita costs 40,000 yen, which could have put consumers off. He also said that the Vita lacks a “system seller,” and that it might also be suffering from the PSP’s success. Sony’s older system sold 60,000 units this week, indicating that some customers still want the older model rather than a new toy.

The Vita sold 321,407 units in its first week, which puts it behind the 3DS. I have a feeling that the PSP’s history will repeat itself with the Vita — it won’t ever beat Nintendo’s offering, but it will still succeed in its own right, selling well and making money. I just hope that certainother things about the PSPdon’t get repeated either.
